Dear Friend:
In February, 2001, a Forum was held pursuant to a grant received by the UVA Institute for Environmental Negotiation (UVA-IEN). The purpose of the grant was to design and implement a targeted community watershed forum to involve community stakeholders (Rural Nelson, Inc., Nellysford Area Merchants Association, Nelson Co. Farm Bureau, Nelson Co. Planning Commission, and others) in developing shared strategies for improving the health of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.[1] This Forum produced a Watershed Action Plan for the Rockfish River (Action Plan). The core group to carry forward this Action Plan became Friends Of Rockfish Watershed (FOR Watershed).We are a nonstock, nonprofit corporation under Virginia law.
At
a January 28, 2002 board meeting facilitated by Steve Talley, Canaan Valley
Institute, we chose a number of items from the Action Plan to accomplish
during 2002. A major focus is to build
capacity for the purpose of addressing the Action Plan in its entirety
over time. We are mounting a membership drive to: increase our voting members,
increase our volunteer labor pool, and fund our objectives. This membership
drive includes:
Events:
1) tour
of CREP farms;
2) tour
of VDOT Rockfish River mitigation project;
3) meeting
to recruit Master Gardeners for Surface Stream Monitoring of the Rockfish River
using VA SOS method;
4) participate
with Rural Nelson, Inc. at the Oak Ridge Summer Festival;
5) present
tract at Wintergreen Nature Foundation fall seminar;
Research:
6) perform quarterly Surface Stream Monitoring of Rockfish River at 6 different locations;
7) perform ground water inventory of well characteristics (depth, capacity, etc);
Publicity:
8) construct interpretive signs along VDOT's Rockfish River mitigation area;
9) construct information kiosk at a prominent place on the Rockfish River;
10) write, print, & distribute paper on Septic Tank Pump-Out in Nelson County;
11) develop web site; and
12) compile database, write, print, and mail 1000 membership invitation letter packages.
13) create brochures
Your Time, Talent, and Treasure (membership dues and contributions) are needed to help make this worthwhile organization viable. Please join today!!
